Where is the jewellery made?
We make each and every piece in our backyard studio in Toronto, Canada. With windows on all four sides, its as close as we could get to working outside, except its heated in the winter!
What metals do you use in the jewellery?
We use only sterling silver, or 18k gold vermeil (a thick layer of 18k gold plated over sterling silver), to make the frames for our collection. The chains are also sterling silver, or gold filled. Each piece is engraved on the back with the .925 symbol (the universal emblem for sterling silver), if the piece is reversible there is a small silver tag stamped with the .925 symbol attached to the tag.
What are the images made of? Are they embroidered?
This is such a common question. We hear it over and over at shows. Customers are always so impressed that Kate can embroider pictures that are so tiny. But the answer is: no, they are not embroidered. The images are Kate's own drawings, printed onto linen. The natural linen, magnified slightly by the resin, gives the vintagy feel of embroidery. This wasn't intentional, but we think its a neat happy accident!
Are the pieces waterproof?
Yes! We wear ours in the shower on a day to day basis, and keep our rings on for months on end, through umpteen daily hand washes, and they show no signs of water damage. In fact, we think they stay clean this way! But do use care when swimming in chlorine. Once or twice shouldn't hurt, but if you swim frequently its best not to take any chances.
How long will it take to receive my order?
Typically, we ship within 1 week of receiving the order. Sometimes faster, if its going to be longer than this you will be notified when we receive your order. If you're in a rush to receive your piece, just send us a quick note letting us know, and we'll get back to you to let you know if we can accommodate your time crunch (most likely the answer will be yes!) From the time it leaves our door until the time it gets to you isn't really in our control. If you choose express mail, and you live in Canada, you should have your order within a day or two of it being shipped. Regular mail can take up to a week. For our U.S. customers, expect it to take about 1 week from the time it is shipped to arrive at your door.
What are the care instructions for the jewellery?
Marmalade jewellery is made with brushed sterling silver. It generally keeps its bright finish for a long time, especially when worn frequently. like all silver, it will tarnish over time. To slow this process, store your piece in a sealed box or bag when not wearing it. To clean the silver, use a paste made of warm water and baking soda. Lightly scrub with a soft toothbrush. To clean the resin surface, rub lightly with a drop of dish soap and warm water. The 18k gold vermeil pieces won't tarnish. No special care is required.
